Ryan Sheckler wins the Bust or Bail contest!
August 31st, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Just watched the video edit of the Thrasher Bust or Bail contest which took place yesterday with Ryan Sheckler coming out in first place, Andrew Reynolds taking second and Andrew Langi coming in third. David Gravette and Justin Figueroa did doubles on the rail and the slam of the day must go to Mellow Jay with a really mad nut cracker and a neck twister…word up for anybody charging down those stairs.
Hamburg skatepark gets a skate loop!
August 31st, 2008 / 4 Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Sunny day in Hamburg yesterday and what do I do? Go to the indoor skatepark – yeah, nuts but I wanted to ride the bowl and what do I get to see when I walk in through the front door? A brand new skate loop had been set up!!!

That’s right, supposedly some guy – not sure if a skateboarder or some inliner – wants to try it out and it was built extra for him. So if you want to try something like this , Hamburg’s indoor is the place to head to till September 12th, 2008. Then it will be taken down again. You can sort of practice in the cradle which is part of the indoor bowl but it is definitely a different story to ride a loop. I’ll be there though when someone tries this thing…I’d rather give it a pass and improve my vert skills in the mean time
Check the map below to find the I-Punkt Skateland skatepark in Hamburg,Germany. And I added some videos of some skaters trying and making the loop on loops around the world.

The Volcom team hit the road at from August 3rd till the 9th 2008 in southern California to check out a variety of parks during their So-Cal Skatepark Tranny Check tour. A big-ass Volcom styled RV was chartered and the likes of Mark Appleyard, Caswell Berry, Aaron Suski, Darrell Stanton, Nick Trapasso, Brandon Westgate, Louie Lopez, Alain Goikoetxea and several other class skaters joined forces to take apart the state of California.
The video speaks for itself and make sure you do head over to the Volcom site as they have a ton of good photographic evidence from the tour as well.

Aaron ‘Jaws’ Homoki joins IPATH team
August 29th, 2008 / 1 Comment » / by Jonathan Young

Old for some, not for me this news. I was in Malmö, Sweden this year for the Quiksilver Bowlriders 2008 finals which was plain and simply fantastic even just to watch (I usually don’t like going to contests to sit there for hours watching other people skate, sort of is against the reason I like to skate…) and one of the skaters that made a big impression on just about everybody there was the 17-year old Aaron ‘Jaws’ Homoki.
He mixes old and new school skating and makes it look like skating should be in my opinion – raw and fun to watch. Blunt to kickflip on 10 foot banks or a McTwist in the deepend of a concrete bowl without any pads? You got it, he’s damn good…have a look at this promo video from IPath and I hope you get the chance to see him live. It was really funny to watch him take second place in Malmö. No big attitude, he was just stoked and kept repeating “this is just awesome…”.
Photo tips: How to get speed in action photo shots
August 29th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

As I have been trying to finally build out the skateboard photography area, I saw the necessity to include more than just pictures. There are enough of us out there who are at the beginning – including myself – and want to get some tips about getting our skills up to par.
So during my daily interweb read-up I came across a series of video lessons with a variety of tips about different photography topics which I find quite easy to watch and they do give some helpful tips from Gordon Laing who runs the DSLRTips.com website. The man knows what he’s talking about – he’s been involved with photography for over two decades so listen in to the video below if you wish to learn!

VOX team ripping the Oslo bowl park
August 29th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Part of the VOX Footwear team consisting of Peter Watkins, David Gravette and Dan Drehobl ended up in Norway sometime this summer and ripped the new and I almost have to say “delicious”-looking bowl landscape that is now part of Oslo…I couldn’t find it on the map but I think it is called the “Gamlebyen bowl” – I’m also assuming Gamlebyen is a part of Oslo. Wow, how serious is this reporting on my part, I need to get some facts in here, I’ll ask somebody you knows the facts! But while we’re waiting check out the video….

Mike Vallely takes over Mexico City
August 29th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Mike Vallely has been around for a long time in the skateboard arena so he’s seen his share a strange or different occurances. Not to mention his concerts with his band “Revolution Mother” attracting larger groups of people but what went down during his recent trip to Mexico City is something that is pretty amazing.

He basically went down there to endorse some products – got to make a living so fair game – and skate a show. Well, Mike V. seems to have a ton of fans down there because after giving what looks like 30 interviews, waiting for the crowd to be controlled and then eventually having the show called off due to security problems, it turns out that around 120,000 people had turned up just to see him!
Make sure you read the comments on the SLAP Magazine board, as usual funny as hell. I cab only say that I met up and talked to him and his band members quite casually after a show in Hamburg a while back and he’s a quite relaxed guy to hang out with. All the slack he gets is just a lot of people being bored with their own lives but who would admit to that, right?

Bam Margera going ecological with Plup?
August 28th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Hmmm, somehow I don’t really think that is happening but I don’t want to be putting rumours out there now do I? Well, let me just write about what I see. Bam can be watched in an advertisement for the Finnish company Plup pushing it’s water container products in a viral ad movie circulating through the Internet under the name of “Life and Death” or I am guessing the same in Finnish – great language by the way! you never know if they are angry or happy just by listening to them talk – “Elämä ja Kuolema”. Correct me if I am wrong out there…
At the end I think the meaning of the ad is that you can beat death with these water bottles and what the company is actually doing is a cool cause. Here’s part of the statement from their website: “In Finland PLUP Ltd donates 10 euro cents from each PLUP bottle sold, directly to the Baltic Sea Action Group. These donated funds are used in full for cleaning up the Baltic Sea.
PLUP will be funding cleaning operations outside the Finnish borders as well. Wherever PLUP sells drinks in the unique bottle, a major share of the profit is donated for environmental issues. From country to country we will seek local environmental concerns and areas that are in need of help.” The bottles are made of HDPE, a highly recyclable plastic, so let’s hope that the bottles make it back to the recycling plant and not to the trash dump where they are burned and let off lovely toxic fumes for all of us to breathe.
What sort of gets me is the ecological connection and then looking back at Bam’s collection of cars, how he smashed them up and chugged loads of gasoline with a Lamborghini….well, don’t we all just have our sins in the closet somewhere, doesn’t mean one can’t change for the better.
