Featured Photographer David Newton
September 29th, 2008 / 2 Comments » / by Jonathan Young

The next person up for the featured photographer series on Europeskate is David Newton. Funny that he lives right in a town real close to where I used to visit my mom…small world. His pictures grabbed my attention and I felt he deserved to get his name out there and known.
Who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself (age, what you do in life, where you live)
My name is David Newton. I am 21 years of age and I live in the beautiful city of Boynton Beach, FL. I attend Florida Atlantic University, majoring in Computer Science (yea, I know…lame…). But I love photography, skateboarding, and music (playing and listening).
How did you get into photography, especially skateboard photography?
Photography is the most recent addition to my life. I did take random photos when I was little, but I started to really appreciate photography about 3 years ago. It started out with using a friend’s camera, getting an old SLR from a family relative, and then reading more and buying more. I’m not very good at skating, but I loved going skating with everyone. Being able to witness the tricks they would do. So I thought taking photos of all their amazing tricks would be something fun to do, and a couple years later, it still is. The best feeling is taking a really great photo of a really great trick. I feel almost as if I done the trick, too.

What type of equipment do you use for your photos? (outside shots, night shots, indoor shots)
I have a variety of cameras, but I mainly use three: Nikon D70s (for the digital shots), Nikon F100 (35mm shots), and a Bronica SQ-A (MF shots). For lenses, I have a standard Nikon 50mm, a Nikon 10.5mm fisheye, a Nikon 18-70mm, and a 80mm and 150mm for my Bronica. As for flashes, I use 2 Sunpak 555’s, and a Nikon sb25, all triggered with my PocketWizards. I tend to use this same setup for whatever shoots I have. Only other equipment I use for indoor shots are some umbrellas and stuff like that.

Do you have any special “tricks” which you like to use for certain types of pictures?
Haha. Tricks? I do what I can to try and get the photo. I’ll see what my surroundings are and see if I can incorporate them into the photo. I don’t know about any tricks, though. If I come up with any, I’ll make sure to make a trick tip video or something.
If you could get any new equipment for free, what would you love to have?
PocketWizards would be lovely, a Lumendyne flash would be amazing, or a 35mm fisheye for my Bronica would be the ultimate best freebie. Although that Lumendyne is pretty expensive…

What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?
I hate it. I don’t like doing any of that HDR or whatever thing Atiba has been doing on all his photos lately. I’m sorry, but that’s not photography is about. Shooting whatever, then making it look better with all these crazy Photoshop techniques. I’m not hating on Photoshop, since I use it too for importing my digital RAW files, but I think the best photo is the one where there is little to none post processing. Just straight from the camera.
What are you currently working on and do you have any projects planned?
I’m currently working on getting my name out there in the photography world. I post photos wherever I can on the internet, usually on my Flickr, SkatePerception (www.skateperception.com), Kinesisfilms.net, Bustedskate.com, or I send some photos to a few magazines and see what they say. I plan on getting a website portfolio made someday, once I figure out how I want the website to be. I just hope I can get somewhere with skateboarding photography, or photography in general, and even if it remains a hobby, I’ll never stop loving the “click” sound of the shutter opening and closing.

Thanks to David for taking the time out for us and all the best for your future…

New decks from DEATH Skateboards
September 25th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

DEATH Skateboards has quite a good team together and I just love their designs. Simple and to the point (and they relate to my favorite football club St. Pauli – yeah, I have a season ticket and it’s great. You have to be in the stadium in Hamburg to understand, believe me, it’s not normal football there!) with their graphics, the new Punk Deck Pro Series represents Patrick Melcher, Zarosh and Richie Jackson.
Check out their site as they have a bunch of other decks and cool products if you like the skull, bones and death themes as much as I do!
