Skate videos to start the week off

August 31st, 2009 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Monday morning here and I’m sneaking in a few videos for you to watch in your work break, at school or where ever you are.

Getting it started is a bumpy and simple video edit of a Supreme mini ramp session in New York with Eric Koston, Zered Basset and others – watch it here and no, they’re not on the team, they’re skating the Supreme ramp!

Head on over to the Woodward East camp/park and check out Chris Cole, Billy Marks and Tom Asta with the usual unusual amount of flip and slide magic…it keeps looking easier everyday.

And to round off this morning’s quick peek into only a few of the Internet’s latest video offerings, Element Skateboards welcomes Bjorn Johnston to the (Australian) team – watch him rip it right here.

Etnies 2009 Skate & Create winning video

Etnies 2009 Skate & Create winning video

And here it is, the winning entry from Transworld Skateboarding’s 2009 Skate & Create video contest with involved four companies getting 9 days each in a warehouse to put together a video. And etnies came through with a very convincing storyboard combined with solid skateboarding and just astounding props to win it. Watch the video below but first here’s the official statement to “The Legend Of Boxton Square” from Terry Snyder, etnies Art Director:

We aired out a lot of ideas leading up to S&C, but it was Mike Manzoori’s dream sequence storyboard filled with a cardboard city that had us sold. It fit what we wanted to do visually—the photos and video would be equally striking, and it was “do-able.” The props were lightweight, mostly recycled, the unknown obstacles could be styled to match our set, the video had a beginning, middle, and end, and it was guaranteed to be unique. The stage was set.

Enter Sean Malto… the perfect person to carry out the lighthearted storyline. The story actually starts at TransWorld’s warehouse when he receives a package and finds himself getting sucked into Boxton Square, a cardboard dream city full of places to skate. It was a labor of love for all of us, and it shows through in the photos and video. We couldn’t have asked for a better video director and crew, photographer, set designers, support staff, or team of skateboarders. Everyone ripped.

When you find some time to cruise through the uncountable websites filled with skate photography or just flip through a general photography website, it is always for me just amazing to see the improvement in photo skills and creativity, not to mention the skaters in front of the lense ripping it up.

Today I stumbled across Chris Shields on Flickr with this great shot of “Jake” in the middle of an indy nosebone air between two transitions. These are the type of shots I’m looking for – the ones that make you almost feel like you are in the middle of the air yourself. Chris has a lot of other pictures on his Flickr account so go and check him out. The shot was taken with the following set-up: Camera: Nikon D40X, Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200), Aperture: f/13, Focal Length: 55 mm, ISO Speed: 400.

2009 Skate & Create: C1RCA Broken Dreams

2009 Skate & Create: C1RCA Broken Dreams

The DVS Skate & Create 2009 entry was already a mouth-watering ordeal and C1RCA comes in with another beauty – here’s the official intro to the video from Dennet Oyanguren, the C1RCA Creative Director:

The Broken Dreams concept was to put together a short film about skateboarding achieving a few different things. One was to put skateboarding and the viewer in a different environment than normal. The other was to have the team put together obstacles that they would like to see and session out in the real streets, that are good for tricks, as well as challenging and interesting to look at; design them, build them, and put those obstacles in our unique setting. Then finally, telling a story rather than just showing tricks going down, adding a storyline and capturing a feeling, and putting the viewer in a moment in time.

The story we tell in Broken Dreams is a story about a guy who is having a session with his krüe. As the night grew later and darker, he started to get very tired. He was not sure if he wanted to stay or go. He decided to leave the session at around four in the morning. As he’s driving, he began to fall asleep at the wheel. As he dozed off nothing seemed to make any sense, “Am I still driving? Am I still at the session? Have I crashed?” These are his thoughts in his dream state. To achieve this concept and to capture this dark “Broken Dream,” we worked strong as a team bringing all of our thoughts together. Creative, filming, photography, lighting, props, obstacles, beer and raw skateboarding were the tools we used to get this piece done.

C1RCA Teamriders: MVP Peter Ramondetta, Sierra Fellers, Scott Decenzo, Tony Tave, Ryan Gallant, Walker Ryan.
