Oslo Games 2008 this coming weekend
July 1st, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Now it is about time I get around to informing you guys (sorry, and girls..) out there about what has happened with the Quart Games 2008 in Kristiansand, Norway which were supposed to start tomorrow in cooperation with the Quart Music Festival.
Unluckily, the Quart Music Festival went bankrupt and the entire event was left it seemed to die – this just 4 weeks before the event was planned to get going! The good thing is that there are still some very engaged people and companies out there that have rolled up their sleeves and moved mountains to make sure this event takes place.
Skateboarder Carl Edvard Heisholdt and pro snowboarder Terje Haakonsen contacted one of Norway’s largest banks which has sponsored skateboard ramps in the past for local communities and supposedly the same day they responded, confirming their interest in supporting this event with part of the necessary funding ($30,000 in the prize purse so any big contest for Europe!)
The Oslo City Chief Commissioner then declared that he would do everything in his power to help us get the competition to Oslo. He also helped the organisers of the event to get in contact with a Norwegian shipping brokerage which now has also contributed to the event with funding.
Here’s more info directly from the newly named Oslo Games website:
“The contest has now been officially relocated to the capital city, Oslo. Two established and well known street spots in the city have been selected by Henning to be part of the competition. In addition, a number of curbs, ledges and kickers will be built to compliment the existing obstacles. Oslo City Council has been tremendously helpful in getting us the necessary permission and even a competition day at the legendary spot in front of City Hall is in the works.
The Oslo Games will be held in conjunction with the Oslo Live music festival. All participants will receive free entry to the festival and plenty of time to enjoy the music, the beautiful outdoor venues, club gigs and the best parties ever.
Thanks and congratulations to everyone who has made this event possible!”
I’m happy to hear that enthusiastic skaters, snowboarders and ‘normal’ people from the government, businesses and the community have come together to keep this event alive. All the best for this event!

HellFest 08 skate rock n roll in France!
June 30th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

I popped over the the Antiz Skateboards website today and there’s a good little post about the HellFest 08, a heavy metal festival in France, which took place June 20th till the 22nd in Clisson, France. With a massive line-up of bands (Slayer was there, so that would have been good enough for me…really now, loads of good bands were there!) the French metal fans were ready to get blasted away.

Not as if that was good enough. Vans and Carhartt hooked up with Matt Grabowski (Minus Skateboards) to build yet another very original looking pool landscape which resembled on the outside an old ship! Most of the Antiz team showed up as well as friends from the Yama Skateboards team. The whole weekend looked like it was a blast, what more do you want to have in life?
I knicked the picture off of the blog from L.B. Fotos so do this guy a favor and check them out there:

Verse – ‘Aggression’ record check-out
June 22nd, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Verse is a band out of Providence, USA and if you have been following hardcore music for several years, then you have heard of this band which is relentless in keeping to it’s roots and playing straight-forward hardcore music. This third release from Verse goes by the name “Aggression’ and you can easily say that the name works out quite well.
I personally like the way the record doesn’t stray into new fields of music so you get a chance to hear how well they play as a unit. Sure, it can be good for bands to go off and try something new but it happens too often that it isn’t the band you started liking the first time you heard them. Nothing completely new or amazing on this record, but I bet they are more than worth the entrance fee for a live gig.
Ahh, what a great bridge I made there – Verse is currently on a US tour till the middle of July, then they’ll be taking a few weeks off before they head over to Europe. Here are the US tour dates for you:

Revolution Mother gets an Element shoe
June 10th, 2008 / 1 Comment » / by Jonathan Young
Getting in line with an ever growing list of bands getting signature shoes, Revolution Mother (Mike Vallely’s band) has hooked up with Element Skateboards to bring out the Mike Vallely 2.0 shoe with the Revolution logo enbroidered on the side and the back of the shoe. Same shoe as Mike’s grey and red versions, they do look pretty comfortable, anybody have a pair and an opinion about them?
Anti-Flag “The Bright Lights Of America”
June 4th, 2008 / 1 Comment » / by Jonathan Young

What is there left to say about this band? If you haven’t heard about them then you most likely don’t like this type of music but you should still give them a try. Anti-Flag keep on bringing out those records which pretty much sound the same but they know how to produce records that make you want to jump up and down, scream the lyrics back at the band and stumble out of the gig soaking wet in sweat and pretty drunk.
Their latest effort “The Bright Lights Of America” has been even more influenced through pop-catchy rhythms and lyrics but if you’ve liked them once and seen them live, you still won’t be disappointed. Nothing really new but I’ll still turn this one up while I’m skating or chilling with my friends.

Black President set to blow things away
May 20th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Just got home from work and I decided to make sure that the Music area here isn’t left stale again for a few weeks so I popped over to the Warped Tour 2008 website to read throught the list of bands on the tour this year just to find some new material. So going from the top to the bottom I came across the band named “Black President” which fits right in this year in the States.
Turns out that this is yet again a band formed from some bigger names from past bands (Goldfinger guitarist Charlie Paulson, Circle Jerks/Bad Religion guitarist Greg Hetson, vocalist/rhythm guitarist Christian Martucci (of Dee Dee Ramone’s touring band),Unwritten Law bassist Pat Kim and Guttermouth/Bullets and Octane drummer Ty Smith). They came together back in 2006 and have toured already with some big names in the music industry such as Bad Brains, Guttermouth, the Germs and Suicidal Tendencies and as stated above are heading out on the Warped Tour 2008 as well.
The line-up today is the following:
JASON CHRISTOPHER (BASS & ACYCLOVIR) new dead radio
ROY MAYORGA (DRUMS & SWORDS) nausea, sepultura
CHRISTIAN MARTUCCI (GRETSCH WEILDING HUMAN AIR-RAID SIREN) dee dee ramone band, strychnine babies
CHARLIE PAULSON (GUITARS, DRILL SGT.) goldfinger
The music is pretty much in-your-face punk rock n roll with good vocals giving the sound the edge it needs to come across real. Make up your own opinion – their debut record should be out this summer and I want to get it. This sounds yet again like a band that will have to be reckoned with in the future, looking forward to them!
