Music Tip - Noise By Numbers

New week and tons of new music – getting it started off this week is the band Noise By Numbers – here’s some basic info about the band from Jim DeRogatis before you get to dive in and let your ears enjoy the vibrations:

“Though two of its members have much higher-profile pedigrees — Dan “Vapid” Schafer has played in Screeching Weasel and the Riverdales, as well as leading the Methadones, and Jeff Dean is in the Bomb — their new collaboration, Nosie By Numbers, with bassist Rick Uncapher (Textbook) and drummer Jimmy Lucido could easily be overlooked outside the punk underground, and that would be a shame. Noise By Numbers draws inspiration from the fertile ’80s indie-rock scene of Husker Du, the Replacements, Dinosaur Jr. and their ilk as well as classic Chicago punk sounds like Naked Raygun and the Effigies to inject a heaping dose of sing-along melody into every propulsive and hard-hitting groove, making for an instantly familiar yet somehow distinctive and fresh-sounding formula.”

Music Tip - The Real Danger

Rainy outside today and I have a day off (yeah, another German holiday) so I’m checking out bands I haven’t heard of much before like I do once and a while. Today I seem to be in a melodic punk mood as the guys from “The Real Danger” out of Rotterdam, The Netherlands have really made it into my skull while I’m typing away on my laptop. Easy going music, no frills, just straight forward easy listening music with some good vocals and a band that backs it up well. Listen in to some of their latest efforts right here and I’ve thrown in a video clip as well. Read more…

Music Check-Out: Strung Out - Agents Of The Underground

For those of you who are into punk music Strung Out is a band to know that has been around since 1992. Sure, it’s not like we are expecting something amazingly new with this latest full length release (seventh studio album and 13th release on the Fat Wreck Chords label) “Agents Of The Underground” but they continue to put together a strong mix of fast drums, gripping melodies and the always present guitars which will get me to the next show here in Hamburg. Here and there it gets a bit close to the so-called pop-punk type of sound but still, good work guys!

This record has already been out since the end of September 2009 so yeah, I’m behind on this check-out but whatever – go listen in yourself!

Music Checkout - Over Stars And Gutters

Took a bit to get back to putting some new music on the site but good things take a while sometimes. As I have a bunch of time on my hands, I’ve been finding a bunch of new sites and bands which has been making these wintery days just that little bit better. One great site I came across is Bandcamp which offers a platform for bands to offer their music to the public for free listening (no 30 second songs, the whole thing here!) and a simple payment program is also offered.

The band that really caught my attention is “Over Stars and Gutters” which just joined the “Black Numbers” label and their latest recording which is due out on January 12th, 2010 was recorded by Stephen Egerton (who recorded the Static Radio EP but is better known for his time in Descendents and ALL), Over Stars and Gutters debut full length reissue for fans of gritty punk rock ala Hot Water Music. Great sound, honest punk rock with no extras – get your ears over to their digital shop, listen in and even buy the record at the price you want!
