Remember System Skateboarding Mag? Here Comes Free Mind Magazine

December 8th, 2009 / 1 Comment » / by Jonathan Young

It wasn’t that long ago that I had a really good connection to the Polish skateboard scene thanks to Mateusz Paszkiewicz, the man behind the well-good online mag System Skateboarding (click here for the last issue!). He put in an amazing amount of time and effort into gathering the news, setting up interviews, traveling to contests – basically what you have to do to create a publication that will attract people to come back for more. Yeah, I can understand him perfectly.

Do to difficulties which I won’t go into, the mag sadly died out earlier in 2009 but knowing Mateusz, this couldn’t be the end. He’s working hard on a new mag titled “Free Mind” which should be going online in December 2009 – hell, that’s like now! -and he’s already got a blog going as well. It’s in Polish but luckily there are pictures and videos as well :) Good luck to you Mateusz and I’ll be sure to let you all know when the first issue goes live.

Filharmonia Skateboarding video from Poland

This is why I just love using the Internet to get in contact with people – it offers the chance to discover so much that one probably would never get to see, read and enjoy. The guys from Filharmonia Skateboarding out of Poland put together this city montage video which has quite a few bangers of tricks in it. I’m not going to even try to put in the names, maybe somebody can help out with who skated, who filmed etc. – Poland has got some serious talent, watch out!

System Skateboard Magazine is over and out

System Skateboard Magazine is over and out

Running a magazine, in print or even online, is no easy task and requires a lot – and I mean tons – of work, overtime, hours upon hours in front of the computer, behind a lense and most often for little of no money. The people behind the scenes, especially with skateboarding, are doing it because they love skateboarding.

Mateusz Paszkiewicz – the editor of System Skateboarding Magazine out of Poland – decided to call it a day with that mag which is a lose for all BUT….he did it for reasons of his own and all is not lost. Why? Because he is just moving further and currently he is working on building up a new independent magazine going by the name of “Free Mind Magazine”! I always enjoyed the System Skateboarding Magazine and with Mateusz behind this new endeavour, the future will surely bring us another top notch project. Looking forward to whatever is coming our way, good luck Mateusz and as always, my support/Europeskate support is with you!

System Skateboard Mag - Issue 10 online

Almost missed out on reporting about one of my favorite online mags, straight out of Poland in both Polish and English – System Skateboarding magazine! And they have just reached the one year birthday mark with their latest issue 10.

This issue is a bit more personal, showing a lot of people most of us have never heard of and in the first half of the mag there’s not that much skating even. But as usual Mateusz has put together a solid mag which is always great read through to hear more about the skateboarding culture in another country! Keep it up guys…click on the title page below to read the whole thing!

Interview with Nervous Skateboards from Poland

Interview with Nervous Skateboards from Poland

Poland has a fast evolving skateboard scene full of really good skaters – like in many countries – most of us have probably never heard anything about. Mateusz Paszkiewicz from System Skateboarding Magazine caught up with Bartek Milczarek, the Nervous Skateboards owner, to give us a chance to hear the thoughts and opinions of a Polish skater. Here we go:

Where did you find the idea of starting with skateboarding brand?

Working in Metropolis skate-shop with my friend Jarek Pijewski, I thought that it would be cool to create something new. We wanted to use the fact that we know a lot of people from Polish skateboarding.
In that time everybody was making clothes, we wanted to make our own hardware – wheels and decks. It was in 2000 that we put our cash into the brand fifty-fifty, we borrowed money from our families. I remember the moment when we took out the first t-shirts and sweatshirts with our logo from the boxes. That was a big shot of emotions hehe. We liked it, so did our friends, and that’s how everything started…

How Polish skateboarding industry looked like then?

As I said, it was 2000. In that time we had R Pure Denim – our sponsor in that time, then Syndrom, Studio Super Brand, Malita, Mentor I Bottle. Generally, everybody made money only by making clothes. I remember those times very good. Polish brands where on a good way, we had the first Polish skateboarding contests and sponsorships.

The Nervous Skateboards team

What are your duties as Nervous Boss?

I’m making my own trousers, the Boss pro model hehe. I’m just joking, but by the way, you can find a Boss promodel! I’m responsible for our production stuff like clothes, hardware and decks.
I’m choosing the stuff, buying and ordering materials. I’m riding the car in the city with two phones in my hand. I’m also responsible for team, events, promotion and marketing.
If I have some spare time, I spend it skating. It’s a hard work.

When did you start making a team?

Well, from the very beginning we had the team which consisted of Jarek Pijewski, Blejza and myself.
Then some things changed and I think that today we have got the best team ever, and we are going to take care of it.

Are there any important things you pay attention to while picking someone for the team?

The important thing are: character, skateboarding skills and style.

Can we meet you skateboarding at some European spots or team trips?

I often try to visit some new places, those more and less known. This year, in May, we did “3 Maj się tour”. I’m trying to do a lot of team trips. Many trips are connected with skateboarding contests. I would like to do a Nervous skateboarding film, so we’ll have to visit a lot of places.

What kind of Nervous stuff can we find?

Decks, wheels, bearings, screws, pads, caps, trousers, sweatshirts, jacket, t-shirts, long-sleeves, and also a cover for your laptop!

Can we expect a new film with Nervous team riders in it?

Yeah, there are some plans of the movie, I will try to do my best to finish this idea. Some time ago I bought a camera, so there is a lot of work to do. Wait patiently for our first movie production!
Keep on real!
