A Few Words With Pedro Barros

A Few Words With Pedro Barros

I feel quite lucky to have been able to hook up with Pedro Barros and his father Andre once again after being able to get an interview with Pedro last year. He’s exactly the type of skater that makes me want to continue skating whatever I encounter – bowls, vert, street, it doesn’t matter. Watching him pull off what he tries with his smooth style in every terrain is just eyecandy and his easy-going attitude with people around him keeps my sympathy for this extraordinary skater at a high. More Sick Bucky Lasek Bowl Action

December 3rd, 2009 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

If you have been coming back once and a while to the site then you know I love vert and bowls. Bucky Lasek’s backyard pool is just plain sick, the biggest concrete pool I have ever seen and Bucky rips it to bits. Have a look for yourself and you’ll be watching it a few times, believe me!

D*Face And The Ridiculous Backyard Pool Project

Long story made short: Peter King and Steve ‘Salba’ Alba discovered yet another beautiful pool in the backyard of another vacant property in the States. This one is so perfectly rounded and smooth that it was named the “Ridiculous Pool”. Not wanting it to be destroyed, the property was bought and UK-based artist D*Face stenciled the shit out of the pool…man, it does look just incredibly smooth!

Europeskate Pic Of The Day October 22nd 2009

My mate Piper (Pipeshots.com) from Konstanz, Germany is down with skating on all types of terrain and knows how to capture skaters in action on film in a very fine fashion as well.

He was recently traveling around in the Basque region of Spain and he hooked up with Txus (the owner of Zut Skateparks who had just finished his latest pool construction project in Sondika – close to Bilbao. The pool coping had just been set and they got the maiden ride in this clove-shaped pool which has the same form as the renowned Turf pool.

ULTRA Malmö Bowl contest weekend underway!

ULTRA Malmö Bowl 2009

Yeah, what a loser – I’m sitting here in front of my laptop in rainy Hamburg, Germany and around the globe some major contests are kicking off. But not all is lost – the number of tech-oriented skaters and companies are growing and the live streaming possibilities are as well. But to get this weekend started let me show you the way to the ULTRA Malmö Bowl contest first (Malmö, Sweden – July 25th and 26th 2009).

Yes, back to the incredible bowl landscape in Malmö. This year Quiksilver is not the organizer/financing body behind the scenes – it’s been pushed by Bryggeriet, the city of Malmö and some other media partners this time around and the contest is concentrating mainly on the backyard pool which is tight, steep and offers pool specialists everything they need to rip. The list of participants is quite rad as well with Benji Galloway, Bill Danforth, Ben Schroeder, the incredible Kevin Kowalski and seriously many, many more top riders invading the Swedish air and grind space this weekend. 7000 Euros are up for grabs in the bowl and that’s not all. Semester Skateboards presents “Big Charge”, a best trick competition on the 10 stair and handrail spot where you can win some cash out of the 1000 Euros prize purse. And for the women out skating there’s a mini ramp contest with another 1000 Euros and almost unbelievable: a freestyle demo! I’m betting right now with myself that many readers haven’t ever even seen a freestyle skateboarder…am I correct?

The guys from Vert.nu (greetings dudes!) are there of course and they already have a great selection of pictures from Friday’s action online – check out the gallery right here.

And even more fun than the pictures: perfect if you didn’t make it and even better if it’s raining – there’s a live webcast of all of the action today and tomorrow from 12:00 – 19:00 CET, just click right here to watch it all!

So I’ll just head out into the rain to walk my dog and then settle on back in here to watch the riding: I have to admit that I’ll be secretly supporting the German crew that made the trip up there (Wolfgangsta, Anders, Thilo, Kevin and Gerd from Bailgun will be getting those good pics as usual). And definitely Ben Schroeder as well after the laughs we had last year, top guy!

Who, How, Now: Bryce Kanights

Photography and skateboarding go hand in hand – there are just some of those magazines with special pictures that stay in memory forever it seems and that’s when you know a photograph speaks louder than 1000 words. Bryce Kanights has been involved with skateboarding for a very long time, both on the board and behind a camera. Nemo Entertainment has put together a three part series (well 5 part including the two bonus videos) which lets us take a look at a what Bryce Kanights does and his ideas behind his work and life.

Part 1 of this series features Bryce Kanights and Kevin Kowalski driving to a foreclosure house in Portland to grab a photo at a secret backyard pool.

Part 2: Bryce Kanights and Kevin Kowalski visit Mark Conahan’s home to check out his new bowl.

Kevin Kowalski is officially nuts

Kevin Kowalski is officially nuts

Don’t take the title too seriously, it’s the only way I can desribe how tough this trick is! I’ve only seen Kevin Kowalski skate once live and in person and that already was enough to realize that this guy rips the shit out of anything that lies in his path. I was going through my daily links again today and this following picture of Kevin making this move at the new skatepark “Coos Bay” is just ridiculous! My bones are too messed up to even think about it – Kevin rules!

Bucky Lasek’s backyard bowl is ready to rip!

Bucky Lasek's backyard pool ready to rip!

Concrete Disciples just put out yet another great interview/article entitled “HEAVEN / BUCKY LASEK’S BOWL” which shows off the utterly stunning new backyard (yeah, that’s right, in his garden!) pool which already looks incredibly large in the photos! This seriously one hell of a dream come true – here’s one short excerpt from the whole check-out from Bucky Lasek himself – click on the picture from “MRZ” below which shows the bowl without skaters to go straight on over to read this one and drool a bit over the amazing pictures!

“Well, I always wanted to build something nice and big. I’ve always ridden these bowls that just didn’t feel right. They were all kind of whippy. They were really tight, fast, and it always hurt when I fell. I just wanted to relate what bowls are today to what vert skating is becoming with the big trannys. It’s a lot easier on your body. You can go a lot faster and a lot bigger. So, we built this bowl. It’s 13.5 ft. deep in the arrow head section and it’s 12.8 ft. in the round. It’s on a slight slope and I made all the hips 45 degrees or less. Real mellow so you don’t get caught with any sharp edges, so you don’t get jammed up”
