Here We Are Again – Big Push 2010
August 24th, 2010 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Back again (what, another year has already passed on by??) with the Big Push 2010. If you don’t know what this is then catch up right here with the words from the people running the contest and check out the video introduction plus last year’s winning video edit from the VANS team below.
» keep looking back for updates on the official Big Push 2010 page
“This year we have an extra team with I-Path joining last years six. We’ve also slimmed down the challenges and dropped the specific regions in favour of dividing the UK into North and South to give each team more time and space to simply go out skateboarding.
Each team is tasked with a variety of missions, including 10 obscure tricks for points, a possible three NBD tricks at famous spots in their assigned area (North or South) as well as a highest ollie competition, which will happen on the road.
As with last year, points accrued from completing the challenges set will count for half of each team’s individual score, with online voting accounting for the rest. Your votes will be added to these pre-existing scores to determine the overall winners – you are voting for your favourite edit – nothing else, so use your vote wisely.
The winning team of this year’s Big Push will score themselves £2000 prize money to share between the participants, as well as the cover of the Christmas mag and internet fame beyond compare.
The Big Push DVD will be cover-mounted on the October issue of Sidewalk, due out in shops on or around the 19th of October.
All the Big Push edits will be online from November 1st to allow those who haven’t seen the magazine to get involved in bigging up their favourite crew of shoe humans. Online voting will close on the 15th of November so don’t hang about.”

Vans Downtown Showdown 2010 Dates In Hamburg, Germany
July 13th, 2010 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Just over one month until the next big skateboarding event hits Hamburg, Germany and this is one I’m really looking forward to – the Vans Downtown Showdown 2010 in Europe will be taking place at the world-famous Reeperbahn August 14th. And the best thing about it is: I can actually get there! Hope you can make it as well to enjoy the skating and the partying afterwards – yeah, I like to party!
Here’s the official statement from VANS about the Vans Downtown Showdown 2010 in Hamburg:
This year’s hosting city of the legendary Downtown Showdown has been confirmed as everyone’s favourite northern German City. That’s right folks, on Saturday the 14th of August 2010 the famous harbour city Hamburg will host the international skateboarding extravaganza, right in the heart of the famous red-light district at the Spielbudenplatz / Kiez.
Ten of the best skateboarding teams from all over Europe have been invited to come together to battle it out against each other – far removed from the usual format of any other skateboarding competition. The event will take place on special customised ramps, which are all designed by the teams themselves. Inspired by all the weird and wonderful things that come to mind when thinking of the cities colourful reputation, you can be sure to see some very special obstacles to be built. Think shipyards, sailors, pirates, dirty bars, hourly motels, ladies of the night, anchor tattoos, salty sea dogs, sea shanty, the Beatles (and staying up all night), stripey tops, parrots, Reeperbahn, Astra Beer… get the idea?
The Vans Downtown Showdown is not just another skateboard competition, but a challenge, where craftsmanship, obstacle ideas and creativity play a decisive role.
It was just last year, that the now legendary US Downtown Showdown skateboarding event came cross the Atlantic to take place in Europe for the first time: On top of the high roof of the historic Lingotto building in Torino (Italy).
We can announce that some of the top board-brands in skateboarding have already confirmed to join in for this year’s event. Antiz being one of them with Pro skaters Hugo Liard, Sam Partaix, Julian Dykmans and Julian Furones up for the challenge. Also agreed to take part and send their talented team to Hamburg is Element Europe. Watch out for Guillaume Mocquin, Phil Zwijsen, Ross McGouran and Madars Apse tearing up the course.
All board companies are invited to create an original and challenging obstacle idea from which the best three will become part of the course and then skated in separate jam sessions. If past designs are anything to go by then there are sure to be some surprises that will keep spectators and riders alike entertained throughout the day. Oh and we almost forgot to mention, the prize purse is filled full to the rim with a total of 50’000 Euro which will be split across the different teams for winning the set challenges.
The Vans Downtown Showdown concept was created for skaters by skaters and has been running in Hollywood’s Paramount Studios, with huge success, for four years. Involving legends such as Jamie Thomas, Alex Olson and Rick McCrank and companies such as Girl, Zero, Toy Machine and Alien Workshop, who each year, create their own Off the Wall ideas to be skated. Be ready to see some European flavour added to this renowned event, leading the way for future skate contests.

The Big Push 2009 – All Videos Right Here
November 22nd, 2009 / No Comments » / by Jonathan Young

Some comments have been coming in, asking just about if I have been sleeping while the Big Push 2009 has been all over the media. Easy answer – no, I wasn’t sleeping
I’ve been reading the Sidewalk Skateboard Mag, watching videos and just enjoying it while thinking for myself: who am I going to vote for. Six teams involved, the judges points are in and now it’s up to us to help decide which team wins fame and fortune. What was the difference to last year?
a) Each team was allocated a specific geographic area – hopefully meaning less repeated spots and a more comprehensive sessioning of the country.
b) Each team were set regional specific tasks – i.e. everyone doing certain tricks at certain spots, set concrete parks to visit and film a line at, obscure trick list to fill out and, most importantly NBD challenges at one iconic spot per area.
c) This year the winner will be chosen 50% through online voting and 50% through points garnered through completion of set tasks.
That’s all folks – voting will close on December 10th 2009 and for all of those who don’t have a copy of the latest Sidewalk Skateboard Magazine, I’ve added all of the videos in here (thanks to Mpora.com) – 6 videos to choose from. The link to the voting page is after all of the videos, click on the following link to watch all of the videos!

The Big Push 2009
September 14th, 2009 / 1 Comment » / by Jonathan Young

Just making sure that one of most traditional 5 day contests in the UK is getting started tomorrow, September 15th 2009 and it runs until September 19th 2009. Here’s the “official” announcement from Sidewalk Skateboard Magazine which has taken over as the host as Document Magazine had to close shop:
Now in its fifth year, the Big Push is a well-established and highly anticipated part of the UK skateboard calendar. Created by Percy Dean of Document magazine, the Big Push aims to pit the premium skateboard teams in the country against one another on a whistle-stop tour of the hottest and most iconic skateboard destinations that the UK has to offer.
“This year, the Big Push sees the reins being taken by the UK’s largest skateboard publication Sidewalk and aims to be bigger and better than ever before. With teams from Vans, Nike SB, DC, Adidas, Etnies and Team Shiner, and pre-assigned area specific tasks for each team, 2009 should see the most varied and explosive Big Push yet.”
