This is the sort of news flash I have been waiting to come as the skateboard industry continues to grow and attract bigger and financially stronger sponsors. The Maloof Money Cup will be the largest purse ever to be up for winning in the history of skateboarding!
This national championship skateboarding event is coming to the Orange County Fairgrounds in California in July 2008. The Maloof Money Cup, a six-event competition with $400,000 in prizes, will be held in conjunction with the opening weekend of the 2008 Orange County Fair from July 11-13, according to information from event sponsors.
Joe Maloof, who owns the Sacramento Kings basketball team, created the three-day festival that will include a skateboarding camp, an amateur event and several professional events sanctioned by World Cup Skateboarding. Interactive games and activities will share 40,000 square feet of space with manufacturers of gear for skateboarding and other active sports.
A $100,000 prize will be awarded to the champion of the US Pro Street Championship; $75,000 and a sports utility vehicle will go to the winner of the US Pro Vert Championship; and $25,000 will be given to the winner of the US Women’s Pro Street Championship. Hmmm, just wondering here: that’s $200,000 dollars + one car = $400,000??? Maybe somebody can clear that up but it is still a heck of a purse!!
Maloof will be paying the entire bill, which is estimated at between $1 million and $1.5 million, to hold what’s he’s referring to as “The Super Bowl of Skateboarding.” Skateboarding is getting big…
